Kate and Will Rumoured to Ride Boris Bikes in London

The Daily Mail reports that "Kate and Wills may not have been spotted on the tandem Boris bike they received from the Mayor as a wedding present yet, but they are secret fans of the free bike scheme.

The bright blue two-seater they own is probably the most conspicuous bicycle in London, so on their off-duty days the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge prefer to cycle side-by-side like the rest of us.
St James's Palace confirmed that the couple have been known to use the rental bikes.

Lost their love of tandem? William and Catherine canoeing on the same lake back in July a spokesman said: 'The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge occasionally use the London cycle scheme bicycles to undertake private journeys around London.'
And who could blame them, the route from their home in Kensington Palace to their Office in St James' Palace can be cycled in 20 minutes.

It is a beautiful ride through Hyde Park and Green Park with a Boris bike docking station at each end and only the slightly tricky Hyde Park Corner to negotiate.
Mr Johnson first set the rumour treadmill rolling last week when he told LBC radio: 'I don't know for certain, but I was told that members of the royal family do use them.
'I was told that Wills and Kate use them but that may be inaccurate.'"

On your bike: Eight million journeys have been made on Boris bikes since their launch in July 2010

Will and Kate are Fans of Downton Abbey!

The Daily Mail reports.

"Prince William and wife Kate have revealed they like to spend their Sunday evenings cuddled up on the sofa - watching Downton Abbey.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge told actress Jessica Brown Findlay - who plays Lady Sybil Crawley in the ITV drama - they were 'huge fans of the show'.
The 22-year-old star met the Royal newly-weds at a BAFTA event in Los Angeles, where she said they singled her out to speak to.

She said: 'I got to be presented to William and Kate, who was beautiful and lovely and very kind!
'I was flattered and privileged to be presented to the two of them at the BAFTA event in Los Angeles.
'They picked me out and spoke very highly of Downton Abbey, and it was lovely to hear. 'They told me that they were huge fans of the show.'
She told OK! magazine she was completely in awe of the Duke and Duchess.

'It wasn't exactly all in a day's work for me but it was for them, I'm sure,' she said. 'It felt surreal as an actress playing English aristocracy to meet them in LA. 'And as I am scared of flying it was already strange enough to be so far away, so I said to them: 'Can't we do this again in the UK?' 'It was wonderful. 'I was so starstruck, literally paralysed through the whole meeting.'
The show, which stars Dame Maggie Smith and Hugh Bonneville, is one of ITV’s most popular and has been praised by critics.

It picked up four Emmy awards, including the coveted best miniseries or TV movie Emmy.
With over 11 million viewers in its first season, the series is the most successful period drama since Brideshead Revisited and is also one of the most expensive television programmes ever produced."

Kate Middleton and the Re-Birth of the Nude Stocking

Most people may or may not know that one of the rules of etiquette among female royals is that they must always wear stockings (or come under fire for sure), as opposed to wearing nothing and "wearing" bear legs. This would then help people to justiyfy why Kate Middleton, since her engagement last November, is so often seen in them, and also why the nude stocking has come back "in" in such an big way. It's not because she's frumpy or old-fashioned (although the latter may be somewhat true), but because she's following the example of her in-laws. Also, it does seem much more elegant to be wearing something on one's legs at more formal occassions. Just because Americans have an issue with it, and are they're used to their Californian fashions from Hollywood, does not mean anything. WAY TO GO KATE! Once again she is bringing classic and classy back into style, and showing that although time moves on some things never die - or at least shes shows that maybe they shouldn't. The English perpetually do a good job of reminding us of how we can keep good things from the past (being modest and looking well put together and elegant) and make it relevant in the present and in the future.

Here is what the Daily Mail has to report on the issue:

"How did nude tights become the height of fashion? That the once rather dowdy look is now finding favour with the editor-at-large of the oh-so fashionable Japanese Vogue, Anna Dello Russo, is all down to one family. You guessed it. The Middletons.

‘Kate Middleton is quite old-fashioned... but when she was wearing fleshy, nude stockings it looked so avant-garde,’ she said. ‘I think she has the kind of personality to make them modern.’

While you might not take her word for it that ‘fleshy, nude stockings’ are suddenly the height of fashion, it seems the Middleton effect — both Kate and Pippa favour nude tights — has sent sales soaring.

Style statement: The Duchess of Cambridge has worn flesh-toned tights on all her recent engagements and during her tour of Canada

Debenhams saw sales of sheer tights lift by 65 per cent in the two weeks following the Royal Wedding in April. This spring/summer, following the royal tour of Canada and the U.S., when Kate wore sheer tights almost every day, sales were up a quarter on last year.

Marks & Spencer, too, saw sales of sheers soar by more than a third compared to 2010. The best-selling sheer tights at M&S this year have been the 10 Denier Ladder Resist Tight in Natural Tan, selling nearly 40 pairs an hour.

Even chic American women — long stalwarts of the bare, tanned, hairless leg, even in the depths of winter — are adopting the look.

‘The demand for very sheer, nude and transparent looks is being driven by London,’ an executive at tights company Kayser-Roth Hosiery told Women’s Wear Daily. ‘It’s about being elegant.’

Since the mid-Nineties, sheer hosiery has been abandoned by women, worn only if the office dress code demands it. I haven’t worn a pair of tights for 20 years because I think they look unstylish. Those orangey American tan tights are seen as something our mothers used to wear.

Before Kate came along, none of us would have dreamed of wearing tights, other than black opaque ones.

Kate knows she needs to appear with flawless legs (i.e., no cellulite, veins or bruises), but also that opaque black tights, which she adored in her student days, are no longer elegant enough.

Like Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Kate has opted for sheer and — voila! — suddenly, a tanned, bare leg looks a little cheap and disrespectful.

Joanna Townsend, hosiery buyer for Debenhams, which has brought out a range of sheer tights for different skin tones, says: ‘Nude hosiery is a woman’s weapon to fight the onset of winter, when wearing black opaque tights is too depressing on a golden autumn day.’

Soozie Jenkinson, head of lingerie design at M&S, thinks sales are also on the rise thanks to new technology making them easier to wear.

‘Our sales of sheer tights have increased this year, not only thanks to Kate Middleton, but because we’ve used innovative ladder-resist technology,’ she says.

‘My favourite Autograph sheer hosiery creates a flawless, airbrushed effect — like make-up for your legs.’

I hate black opaque tights: they are just not grown up enough. And while women believe they are flattering, they can make legs look like sausages, while the shiny opaques attract attention.

I was initially resistant to this new nude craze, feeling tights to be a bit too ‘old lady’ for me, but I applaud that this is one new trend that is forgiving rather than exposing every flaw.

These new tights are nothing like the ones my mother wore: they don’t sag, they rarely ladder or even catch, they don’t have ugly dark toes and heels, and they offer support, too. I put the leading brands to the test, which included me sitting with a rather scratchy cat on my thighs."

It also runs in the family: Kate's mother Carole and her sister Pippa are also fans of nude tights

Kate's Old Car Sells!

The Toronto Star reports:

"How much would you pay for a used, blue Volkswagen Golf? It has 104,000 kilometres, new tires, manual transmission and a 1,390 cc engine.

New kate car

It’s amazing was a royal title will do for a used car.

A 10-year-old Volkswagen Golf that was once owned by Kate Middleton – now the Duchess of Cambridge – attracted close to $75,000 as bidding closed on the eBay auction site on Sunday. Five bidders fought over the car for the last 10 days, with the top bid of 48,100 pounds (about $74,500 Canadian) coming in 10 minutes before the end of the auction.

A brand new VW Golf goes for about $24,000. Book value on a 10-year-old Golf is about $5,700.

The highest eBay bid, however, was still not enough to get the car out of owner's garage, since the hidden reserve bid was not met.

“At this stage the vehicle is still available but fortunately for me there is no rush or need to sell it straight away," Sonny Brazil told the Newbury Today newspaper. “I have dipped my toe in the water and I am pleasantly surprised with the attention and bids it has received on eBay.”

The difference with this used car is that it comes with a document that says it was once owned by Prince William’s new bride.

She bought the car in 2001 while she was a student at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. It was there that she met and began dating Prince William. After putting on about 100,000 kilometres, Kate passed the car onto her brother James in 2007. A few years later, the Middletons made a deal with a local car dealership in Berkshire and the car ended up with the dealer owner’s son, Sonny Brazil.

“When I saw who had had the car it was quite a surprise and I thought it might be a nice piece of history,” said the 21-year-old Brazil.

With his eyes set on a down payment toward a house, Brazil decided to put the car up for auction and set a starting bid of $30,000. He said he has contacted by interested buyers in Canada, Germany and U.S., as well, of course, the UK.

“I do believe this will be the best piece of royal history anyone could have,” Brazil notes on the car’s listing.

It's not likely the car will even come close to another little piece of Kate-William history. Princess Beatrice's wacky that she wore to the royal wedding in April was auctioned on eBay for charity and earned more than $125,000.

Originally, Brazil also included a pair of cufflinks he found in the car as part of the auction, but has since taken them out of the sale and said he will give them to the Middleton family.

While he’s at it, he might be wise to check out the Middleton garage for any more Kate artefacts. Must be an old tricycle in there somewhere."

The Star's Version: "Brits Finally Tackle Sexism in Succession Rules"

The Toronto Star reports:

"The British monarchy is finally putting its regal foot in the 21st century.
The tradition-laden Family Firm looks like it might soon be rid of centuries-old rules that discriminates against royal daughters inheriting the throne and forbids marriage to Roman Catholics.
Will-kate

And none too soon, as royal baby watchers stay tuned and the rumour mill keeps churning around the parental prospects of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge (right).

British Prime Minister David Cameron is consulting with the 15 other countries recognize the Queen as their head of state – including Canada – to seek consensus on reforming the laws that date back to the time of Henry VIII. Canada's prime minister, Stephen Harper, has given his blessing to Britain's initiative.

Under the proposed changes, the first child of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, regardless of sex, would eventually become the monarch. As it stands now, a daughter would have to stand aside for a brother, even if she was the first-born.

"We espouse gender equality in all other aspects of life and it is an anomaly that in the rules relating to the highest public office we continue to enshrine male superiority," Cameron wrote in his letter to the heads of the Commonwealth nations, including Stephen Harper.

The current rules about regal religious ties are steeped in British history, dating to the 1500s when Henry VIII famously split with the Roman Catholic church over its laws against divorce.

"This rule is a historical anomaly," Cameron said in his letter. "It does not, for example, bar those who marry spouses of other faiths — and we do not think it can continue to be justified."

The sexism rules have kept women off the throne in the past. Queen Victoria's firstborn was a girl, Victoria, but then along game a boy, who made it to the throne instead as King Edward VII.
Buckingham Palace is staying mum (pardon the pun) on the topic."

Pippa Middleton Attends Charity Event

The Daily Mail reported that Pippa Middleton attended a charity event recently. It seems that Pippa has a similar agenda to her older sister Kate, who was a guest of honour at charity gala this week also.

Here's what the Daily Mail's article had to say:

"When it comes to make-up, they say you should highlight your best feature and leave the rest relatively simple.

But it seems Pippa Middleton just couldn't decide which part of her face to emphasise when she attended a charity event last night.

The Duchess of Cambridge's sister went heavy on the eyes with kohl-rimmed lids - and matched them with a strong pink shade of lipstick and blusher.

Listening intently: Pippa appeared at ease as she mingled with revellers while sipping on a glass of wine at the bash

Pippa opted for heavy eye make-up, statement pink lipstick and blusher as she attended the Too Many Women dinner

But after attracting attention with a low-cut red dress on her last outing, Pippa opted to play it safe with a long-sleeved high-neck outfit as she supported the Two Many Women campaign.

She coupled the look with statement dress, by Dannii Minogue and Tabitha Somerset-Webb's Project D label.

But Pippa showed less flesh than Fergie in the floral outfit but still managed too look stylish with her hair pulled back.

And the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson refused to dress her age in a black gown, showing off her shoulders.

Pippa was joined by her friend Katie Readman at the event, hosted by retailer All Saints at the Petersham Nurseries in Richmond.

The blonde wore a red dress, reminiscent of Pippa's two weeks ago.
Another lady in red last night was actress Sienna Miller, who donned a short dress with feathers attached.

Last night's dinner was in support of Breakthrough Breast Cancer. The campaign aims to raise £1 million for the charity.

Pippa was spotted at the beginning of the month at a charity boxing ball in a dress similar to Geri Halliwell and Prince William former girlfriend Jecca Craig.

However, the clash did not stop Pippa and Geri – who sat at neighbouring tables – chatting to each other. They appeared to be ‘getting on like a house on fire’, according to one observer.

Money raised at the event went to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which grants wishes for seriously ill youngsters, and the Lt Dougie Dalzell MC Memorial Trust, which was set up in memory of a British soldier killed in Afghanistan."

Will and Kate's First Child (whether girl or boy) will Inherit the Throne

Blogger Nadine Jolie writes that "It’s bizarre that in modern times this even needs to be news, but, hey, that’s England! Britain’s House of Lords passed the Sovereign Grant Bill last week, declaring that if William and Kate have a baby daughter before they have a son, the ancient laws of primogeniture will no longer apply, and not only will the girl inherit the rights to the £700 million Duchy of Cornwall, but she’ll also become Queen of England–even if she has a younger brother. Progress! Whoo!"

Blogger Nadine Jolie: Up Close and Personal with Pippa Middleton

Here is a blog entry from Nadine Jolie, on bumping into Pippa Middleton:

"Today I had been planning to go to Stockholm to see some friends and soak up the atmosphere before Crown Princess Victoria’s wedding, but I decided to be responsible instead, save money and hang around London.  (I spent the day doing extremely tedious but necessary work, lest you think my entire existence consists of traveling and spas.  Only on alternate days.  We kid!)

I ended up having a (semi) royal experience of an entirely different kind: a friend dragged me to Harrods for a Brummel magazine party celebrating dashing explorer Tom Avery and his recent book To The End of the Earth, which chronicles his journey as the youngest Briton (and part of the fastest team ever) to reach the South Pole.  (Incidentally, Tom is also one of only 41 people to ever conquer both the South Pole and the North Pole.  Underachiever, that one.)

Lo and behold, who shows up 10 seconds after me but Kate Middleton’s younger sister Pippa Middleton!  (So we saw the Queen on Sunday and Pippa on Tuesday.  Might we garner a Wills ’n Kate run-in by Saturday?  Fingers crossed.)  Pippa was with a gorgeous, impeccably groomed blond guy, who I spotted even before she arrived.  (He was neither Charlie Gilkes, who she was rumored to be dating–though I’m not sure if it’s still on–nor Ali Spencer-Churchill, George Percy, Ed Horner, JJ Jardine Paterson, Sam Branson, nein, nein, nein…)  She wore an outfit that can only be described as classic prepster: fitted navy blazer, white knee-length cotton skirt, brown belt, navy loafers, gold aviator glasses perched on top of her head, and a single gold ring on her middle finger.  (Yes.  Clearly I was staring.)
[For those who care about the other breathless details, she's surprisingly tall--I was standing about 6 inches behind her, and pegged her as at least 2 inches above my 5' 6"--and extremely, resolutely, very slender.  With the exception of too-heavily-rimmed eyes and a deep nut-brown tan that ages her, she's quite pretty and is exceedingly better-looking and cuter than in photos.]

Her friend waved her over, fetched her a glass of champagne, and together they listened quietly with the rest of the attendees as Tom recounted his survival stories, showed photos from his expeditions, and cracked jokes about getting lost in Antarctica and having to ask for directions.  (Did you know there’s a gift shop at the South Pole?  No, really.)  Pippa and her friend stayed for an entire hour on the edge of the small crowd, drinking champagne and nibbling canapes and waiting to leave until after the grand prize raffle was announced: a trip to the Verdura Golf Resort in Sicily, owned by hotelier Sir Rocco Forte, who I interviewed over cocktails last month.
Then, with copies of Tom’s book tucked under their arms, they grabbed gift bags and slipped out the back door of Harrods onto Hans Road, setting off for whatever adventures might await the sister of the future Queen and a well-dressed blond toff on a cozy June night"

Beulah London: Gowns Fit for a Duchess

If you want to wear the same brands and styles (or similar) to a Duchess, look no further! Here is a gown that looks very similar to the one that Kate was wearing recently at a charity gala she and William attended - it's just a short version of her long evening gown.

Kate's Beulah London dress, and others like it, can be found at: http://www.beulahlondon.com/

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Dazzle

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recently attended a charity gala as the guests of honour.

The Daily Mail reports that "the black tie do held at St James’s Palace in London by 100 Women in Hedge Funds. William, 29, is patron of the fundraising City organisation for three years and the event last night raised more than £675,000 for the Child Bereavement Charity, another charity he is personally involved with."
Both the Duke and the Duchess looked smashing, but Kate "Sizzled" in a red gown by Beulah London.
