Prince Philip Arrives in Toronto for a Short Royal Visit

Prince Philip just touched down at Toronto's Pearson International Airport this afternoon. Prince Philip will be in Toronto for the weekend.

Here is what HRH is doing here, according to CityNews:

"On Saturday, Prince Philip will be at the provincial legislature to take part in a breakfast reception with Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Lt.-Gov. David Onley.

The 91 year old will then present a new regimental colour to the Third Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment on the grounds of Queen’s Park.

Regimental colours are a kind of ceremonial flag considered the most prized possession of every regiment.

Prince Philip will then send off members of the Canadian Forces as they march from Queen’s Park to Fort York, where Breakfast Television’s Kevin Frankish will host an afternoon ceremony.

Among the participants in the ceremony will be re-enactment units in War of 1812 uniforms, First Nations whose ancestors fought in the battle and an honour guard of sailors and soldiers who currently serve in Toronto.

The prince has served as the regiment’s colonel-in-chief — an honorary title often bestowed on members of the Royal Family — since 1953.

Military Parade Route

On Saturday, a military parade will begin at Queen’s Park at 11:30 a.m. and end at Fort York at 1 p.m. Members of the current Canadian Forces will honour those who died at the
Battle of York.

The parade will include 13 marching bands and a flourish of colourful ceremonial uniforms and regimental colours.

Road closures will be in effect.

The parade route:

•    south on University Avenue
•    west on Richmond Street
•    south on Portland Street
•    west on Front Street
